Abstract
782,383. Laminates. CELANESE CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Feb. 22, 1955 [Feb. 24, 1954], No. 5280/55. Class 140. A laminate comprising a number of layers of fibrous material permeated with and bonded together by a polymerization product has in an outer surface artificial fibres made from a composition in which there is suspended a white or coloured pigment insoluble in the fibre-forming material of the composition. Designs may be produced by applying the pigmented fibrous material only to selected parts of the laminate or by applying fibrous materials pigmented with different colours. Further colouring material may be incorporated in the binder. The pigmented fibrous material may be cellulose acetate, propionate, butyrate, acetate-propionate, acetate-butyrate, a cellulose ether, polyamide, polyester, polyurethane, polyaminotriazole, a polymer or copolymer of acrylonitrile or of vinylidene chloride, animal or vegetable protein, or regenerated cellulose. Fire-retardants, ultra-violet light absorbents, plasticizer, silicone or polyamide resins may be incorporated in or applied to the fibrous material. The fibrous material may be fabrics, mats or battings of fibres of indefinite length or staple fibres of one or more colours. Alternatively, yarns of pigmented fibrous material may be arranged parallel to one another and incorporated as groups of the same or different colours which may intersect to produce a plaid effect. The pigmented fibrous material may be used as a surfacing layer on a core or backing of one or more layers of woven or felted fibres of glass, cotton, wool, linen, sisal or synthetic fibres. The binder may be a monomer, partial polymer, or liquefied polymer of styrene or methyl methacrylate, a mono- or di-methylol urea, phenol-, urea- or melamine-aldehyde, an interpolymer of diethyl maleate or fumarate with vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, or styrene, or a copolymer of vinyl acetate and vinyl chloride. Numerous polyesters are described, prepared from polyhydric alcohols, polybasic acids, and, if desired, monohydric alcohols and monobasic acids. Polymerizable monomers, for addition to such polyesters, are also listed. Specified polymerizable unsaturated alcohol esters of unsaturated or of polybasic acids, polyhydric alcohol esters of unsaturated acids, polymerizable ethers, divinyl compounds, and vinyl acetylene may also be used.
