In an umbrella frame in which each rib comprises an inner part and an outer part, the inner part being hinged to the outer part near one end thereof whereby said parts can be disposed in overlapping relation, and in which a link is hinged at one end to the said end of the outer part and at the other end to a stretcher, means are provided which limit the movement of the link so that the link will always assume the same position when the umbrella frame is opened. In one form, the umbrella has a stick 10, which may be collapsible or telescopic or made in two separable parts, on which are mounted a crown 13 and a slide 11 retained by a catch 12. Each rib has an inner part 14 and an outer part 15 pivoted together by a member 16 at a point spaced from the inner end of part 15. The stretcher 17 is connected to rib part 15 by a link 18 comprising two side-pieces joined at one end by an integral crosspiece. The link 18 is pivoted at a point spaced slightly from the end of the rib part 15 so that movement of the link is limited by the edges of the cross-piece striking the rib. When the umbrella is opened one edge of the cross-piece will, if the link 18 is not in line with the outer rib part 15, strike the bottom of the rib part 14, so turning the link into line. The umbrella is closed by releasing the catch 12 and moving the slide 11 down the stick 10 until the stretcher 17 lies substantially parallel to the outer rib part 15. The umbrella can then be collapsed by turning the outer rib part 15 to a position adjacent the inner rib part 14 and then moving the slide 11 up the stick 10 until the parts 14, 15 and 17 lie substantially parallel to one another and to the stick 10. A resilient ring 21 assists the initial opening of the umbrella. The Provisional Specification describes an umbrella having a link 6 of different design connecting the stretcher 4 to the outer rib section 2. The link 6 has a rest 7 which limits the pivotal movement with respect to the rib section 2, and a cam surface 10 which contacts the underside of the inner rib section 1.
