Abstract
1,261,115. Self-opening umbrellas. KORTENBACH & RAUH K.G. May 16, 1969 [Oct. 24, 1968], No. 25004/69. Heading A4P. A collapsible umbrella comprises a three-part telescopic stick 1, a main slider 6, an auxiliary slider 8, ribs having innermost, middle and outermost parts 4, 13 and 15 respectively, the middle and outermost parts being joined together by hinges 14, main struts 7 each articulated at one end to the main slider and at the other end to a sleeve 5 sliding on an innermost rib part 4, auxiliary struts 9 fitted between main struts 7 and the auxiliary slider 8, and an opening spring 11 slidingly mounted on the stick between the sliders and urging them apart. When the umbrella is open sleeves 5, which are secured to the middle rib parts 13, press against stops 12 fixed to the innermost rib parts 4 in which are telescopically received parts 13. A covering 17 is secured to a crown 3 to tips 18 of rib parts 15 to sleeves 5 and to central openings (16a) Fig. 2 (not shown), in the hinges 14, each of which comprises a plate 16 secured to a rib part 15 and pivoted to a rib part 13. A handle 2 is secured to the lower end of a bottom stick part 1c having a longitudinal groove 21 guided by and engaging on a longitudinal ridge on a middle stick part 1b. Middle stick part 1b has an aperture (22) Fig. 3 (not shown), near its lower end in which a projection (24) near the upper end of part 1c engages to prevent part 1c being pulled out of part 1b. When the umbrella frame is collapsed a spring-loaded catch (25) Fig. 3 (not shown) pivoted in the auxiliary slider 8 engages in aperture (22), the stick being either extended or collapsed. The collapsed umbrella may have a circular or a substantially rectangular cross-section, the crown, main and auxiliary sliders, and the handle having a substantially rectangular cross-section with rounded corners in the latter case, Figs. 5-7 (not shown). The inner ends of eight rib members 4 of a rectangular section umbrella are secured in pairs to points lying on the longitudunal centreline of the crown 3, the arrangement being synmetrical about the longitudinal and transverse centrelines of the crown, Fig. 7 (not shown), struts and auxiliary struts being similarly secured to the main and auxiliary sliders respectively.
