Abstract
Fibrous material is impregnated uniformly with an acid, treated superficially with a chlorine-containing bleaching compound and then heated. The material may be cotton, flax, hemp, jute, nylon, perlon or "half stuff" used in paper manufacture. The process may follow a desizing treatment with basic reagents, in which case the customary neutralization of the basic compounds, e.g. caustic soda, is effected with an excess of acid, e.g. formic or phosphoric acid. The material is then impregnated with the bleaching compound, e.g. sodium chlorite or hypochlorite solution, which may contain formic acid and which may be heated, and the material is afterwards heated. It is stated that, since they are saturated with an acid, the fibres are only treated superficially by the bleaching compound. Rayon fibres may be desized with a composition comprising sodium carbonate, trisodium phosphate, sodium hypochlorite, and a wetting agent and may then be treated with a near-boiling solution of formic acid prior to the bleaching step. Cellulose fibres may be treated in a flocculent state.
