Abstract
A metal is provided with a chromium-containing coating by being first coated with a liquid or pasty composition containing chromium or chromium alloy in powder form, together with a carrier which is solid at room temperature but becomes liquid or begins to melt at the operating temperature, and which is a halide other than a chromium halide, and then heated by high frequency heating until diffusion of chromium takes place. The metal to be coated may be aluminium, copper, cobalt, iron, steel, nickel, molybdenum, tungsten or titanium. The coating may contain, besides chromium, aluminium, copper, cadmium, iron, manganese, molydbenum, titanium, vanadium, tungsten, zirconium, silicon, nickel or cobalt. Carriers which may be used are cryolite and alkali metal or alkaline earth metal fluorides, chlorides, bromides and iodides, e.g. flourspar, potassium iodide and barium chrolide. The composition may also contain a bonding agent such as an organic silicate, e.g. ethyl silicate, a complex silicate, e.g. Portland cement, solutions of cryolite cellulose esters or ethers, e.g. cellulose acetate, or organic colloidal substances, e.g. glue or gelatine. The heating is effected in an induction furnace or by means of a high-frequency inductor: atmosphere-controlled furnaces may be used as well as gas-tight retorts or boxes, or salt-bath furnaces. Two examples described relate (a) to the coating of a sparking plug made of medium carbon steel, and (b) to the coating of a molybdenum rod. Specification 718,095 is referred to.
