Abstract
An oral preparation free from hydrophobic substances comprises ascorbic acid or a physiologically equivalent ascorbate, e.g. ammonium, sodium, potassium, calcium and ferrous ascorbate, and a non-toxic surface active agent. The surface-active agent may be an organic polymeric non-ionic agent, e.g. polyoxyethylene sorbitan higher fatty acid ester such as the mono-oleate, monolaurate, trioleate, pentaoleate, tetraethyldesoxypolyethylene glycol, alkyloxylpolyethoxyethanol, may be present in amount greater than that of the ascorbic acid. The preparation may take the form of a digestible capsule containing no more than 200 mg. of ascorbic acid, or an aqueous preparation containing not less than 2 gm. ascorbic acid per 100 ml. such as a clear viscous aqueous solution of pH 6.0 to 7.0 containing 10 to 40 gm. polyoxyethylene sorbitan mono - oleate per 100 ml. of solution, 1 to 30 gm. glycerol and 2 to 20 g,. ascorbic acid per 30 gm. mono-oleate present. Other substances which may be present are sodium para-aminobenzoate, gentisate or salicylate, citric acid, sodium saccharin, sucrose, caustic soda, sodium benzoate and propionate, flavouring and preserving agents.
