Abstract

779,888. Electrodeposition of iron-zinc alloys and of different metals in succession. ROCKWELL SPRING & AXLE CO. Jan. 4, 1955 [Aug. 2, 1954], No. 211/55. Class 41. Levelling ductile iron-zinc alloy coatings are electrodeposited from aqueous acid solutions containing 20 to 100 gms./litre of ferrous iron and zinc in a zinc: iron ratio of 0.004-0.05: 1. Preferably the solution is maintained at 100‹ to 220‹ F. and pH 1.5 to 3.5 and contains a buffer such as boric acid or ammonium sulphate and a wetting agent such as sodium lauryl sulphate or sulphated reaction product of ethylene oxide and coconut alcohol. If an ironzinc-nickel alloy is to be deposited the electrolytic bath contains nickel also in a nickel : iron ratio of 0.05-1.25 : 1. To reduce the formation of ferric salts, either iron anodes of large area may be used or iron rods may be immersed in the bath or iron or zinc powder may be added to the bath. If steel anodes are used they are bagged to retain the carbon sludge formed. A steel base coated with an iron-zinc alloy may receive a buffable nickel deposit or a bright nickel deposit as disclosed in Specification 763,981 and a final deposit of chromium.
