A gripper mechanism 161-164 is positioned beneath the warp 21 and is raised by cam mechanism to grip the pile yarns 11, draw them through the warp and return them to the upper side of the warp after severance to form tufts. The pile yarn spools 10 are carried by chains 13 and the pile yarns from the spools are separated by combs 14 mounted on brackets 12. The gripper mechanism extends across the width of the loom and has springs 18 tending to close the grippers. A bowl 166 on an arm 165 co-operates with a cam to open the grippers. Cam means raises and lowers the gripper mechanism through the warp. A comb 22 is raised by cams to engage and space the warp, and may be spring mounted. The comb 22 may be mounted on the gripper mechanism. Knives 24 cut the tuft yarns. The gripper mechanism may be moved sideways when at its lowest position to pass the tuft yarns round the stuffer warp ends. A reed 23 beats-up the weft. If the weft is inserted by a shuttle only one weft yarn is inserted at each pick.
