Abstract

779,048. Sewing machines. SINGER MANUFACTURING CO. Nov. 30, 1955 [Dec. 8, 1954], No. 34262/55. Class 112. Needles shifting laterally. A zig-zag sewing machine is provided with a plurality of cams each having its own follower and the pattern is produced by selective use of one or a particular combination of these cams to effect transverse movement of the needle. The shaft 72, Fig. 7, is actuated from the driving shaft 22 through spiral gears 78, 79 and carries a cam 64 and a hub member 131 which carries as integral parts five cams 132. A follower 120, mounted on a pin 108, and five followers 140 mounted on a pin 141, co-operate respectively with cam 64 and cams 132. Each follower may be turned on its pin to an inoperative position. The pins are carried by an arm 60 of a bell crank lever and, when straight stitching is desired an arm 106 mounted on pin 108 may be turned so that a finger thereon contacts an inclined abutment 111 and raises the arm 60 to render all the followers ineffective. The cam 64 may be replaced by a cam 150, Fig. 13, with two or more notches 152 any of which may be engaged with the driving pin to alter the phase position of the cam. The bell crank lever 60, 49, Fig. 9, operates a bell crank lever 44 coupled by a link 42 to the needle-bar gate 31. The lever 44 is pivoted to a guide block 80 arranged in a guideway in a guide head 84 which may be adjusted arcuately and bodily to vary the maximum needle vibration and the neutral position of the needle. The guide head is mounted and adjusted as described in Specifications 733,462 and 733,470.
