Abstract
1,274,980. Skip stitch zig zag sewing machines. SINGER CO. 31 July, 1970 [7 Aug., 1969], No. 37075/70. Heading D1G. In a zig zag sewing machine capable of forming stitches in a predetermined range of laterally jogged positions of the needle bar means are provided for influencing the lateral jogging movement of the needle bar beyond that predetermined range and interrupting means are also provided to prevent reciprocation of the needle bar during lateral jogging movement of the needle bar beyond the predetermined range. As shown a counter balanced drive crank 27 is connected through a link 28 to a block 30 which is free to reciprocate on needle bar 24. Normally a depending arm 37 on a latch lever 35 pivoted to a block 32 fixed to the needle bar 24 engages in a notch 39 on block 31 so that a reciprocating drive is transmitted to the needle bar from the crank 27 and the block 31. Needle jogging movements are transmitted to the needle bar gate 22 by a zig zag drive link 50 from followers 54, 55 (not shown) which are moved by cams below the cam 90 on a cam shaft not shown. The normal jogging cams jog the needle within a range throughout which the machine is capable of producing stitches. However, when the cam follower 54 is moved to track cam 90 in the maximum bight position the recesses 90 are deeper than those on any other cam and hence the needle bar is jogged beyond the predetermined range in which stitches can be formed, defined by the size of aperture in the presser foot and throat plate and also by the limits at which the needle can cooperate with the looper. When this movement occurs an upstanding finger 36 on the latch lever 35 which causes the depending arm 37 to rotate and release the notch 39 thus breaking the reciprocating drive link. The needle bar is retained in its elevate position by a shoulder 112 and an inclined cam portion 113 is provided to move the lever 35 to the right should the shoulder 112 fail to retain the depending arm 37.
