Abstract
777,468. Conductor for dynamo-electric machines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. May 25, 1955 [June 1, 1954], No. 16236/54. Class 35. In an alternator the rotor has a multi-layer concentric winding with at least two insulated conductors side by side in a layer and the bars are directly cooled by axially flowing medium. As shown in Fig. 2, insulating spacers provide ducts between the conductors 4 for the passage of hydrogen and the spacers can be in long strips, spaced one-piece members 18 (Fig. 5), or made up of strips 16 and collars 17, Fig. 5. Conductors in different layers may be of different shape and effective conductor positioning could be obtained by adjacent edges of two conductors being tapered and grooved. The conductors could also be hollow in which case they occupy all the slot space not needed by insulation, and in this case may have tapering sides as shown in Fig. 8. As a further alternative they may be oval in cross-section. The coolant could enter the end winding portions of the conductors as shown in Fig. 10 and the end winding construction may be as described with reference to Fig. 6 (not shown).
