777,383. Rectifying. HACKBRIDGE & HEWITTIC ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and WELLS, R. Jan. 24, 1956 [Feb. 4, 1955], No. 3332/55. Class 38 (2). So that the D.C. output voltage of a grid-controlled mercury arc rectifier energized through a transformer including an interphase transformer 9 does not rise under no load conditions, the instant of grid energization is retarded by the disappearance of a bias voltage derived from the interphase transformer normally applied to the grids 3. This bias voltage is taken from the output of a rectifier 17 supplied through transformer 12 from interphase transformer 9, and applied between cathode 2 of the mercury arc rectifier and star point 29 of the secondary windings 26 of the grid transformer. The bias voltage is smoothed by LC circuit 21, 22 and its value adjusted by potentiometer 20. The voltage applied to transformer 12 may be suitably adjusted by varying tappings on interphase transformer 9, Fig. 2 (not shown), or on a resistor connected across it, Fig. 3 (not shown).
