A fluid pressure control device for a variable displacement hydraulic pump comprises a casing with inlet and outlet, a valve with a movable stem, two chambers connected by separate passages to the inlet, the stem being moved in one direction by inlet pressure in the chambers reaching a predetermined value, for connecting the inlet and outlet, means for moving the stem in the opposite direction when inlet pressure falls below that value, restricted communication between the chambers for damping the movement of the stem in the opposite direction and means for sealing off one passage during fall of inlet pressure. The casing has the inlet 34 connected to the pump outlet, the outlet 36 connected to a spring-loaded piston operating the pump stroke control and a drain 86. The valve 48 has a stem 58 and a land 48 both responsive to rise in pump outlet pressure above a predetermined value to move the valve to the left to connect the casing inlet and outlet, and a spring 66 urging the valve to the right to connect the casing outlet to drain, the land and stem being respectively open to pump outlet pressure via passages 46, 50, the latter containing a check valve 52. The system is for maintaining a predetermined pump output pressure irrespective of the output. As the valve moves to the right fluid trapped in chamber 56 between stem 58 and the closed check valve damps the movement, the fluid leaking away between the stem 40 and the bushing 42.
