Abstract
Reforming treatments of hydrocarbons in the presence of hydrogen such as paraffin hydrocracking and cyclization and naphthene dehydrogenation at temperatures from 427-593 DEG C. and pressures of 6.8-136 atmospheres in the presence of hydrogen of molar ratio to hydrocarbon of 0.5-10:1 are carried out using a molybdenum catalyst supported on an inorganic oxide. The catalyst is made by calcining the support; hydrating to a moisture content of 1-10 per cent by weight; impregnating with an acidic solution containing molybdenum and finally drying and calcining.ALSO:An inorganic oxide support, preferably alumina, is calcined; hydrated to a moisture content of 1 to 10, preferably 3-8, per cent by weight, e.g. by exposing to an atmosphere containing water vapour; impregnated with an acidic solution containing molybdenum and finally dried and calcined. A wetting agent may be used in the hydration of the support. Regeneration may be achieved with oxygen or hydrogen. Other elements which may be incorporated into the catalyst are:-iron, cobalt, nickel, sulphur, fluorine, chlorine or other halogens. Catalytic supports exemplified are:-silica magnesia, zirconia titania hafnia thoria and zinc oxide; composites such as silica-alumina, silica-zirconia, silica-alumina-zirconia, silica-magnesia, silica-alumina-magnesia, alumina-zinc oxide, alumina-zirconia, alumina-titania and zinc oxide-zirconia, naturally occurring oxides such as felspar, bauxite, kaolin, fuller's earth, kieselguhr, montmorrillonite, bentonite and attapulgus clay. The catalysts are used for the purification of hydrogen fractions, e.g. cracked naphthas.
