Abstract

A base for an alumina catalyst is produced by grinding an aluminium hydroxide so that more than 60 per cent thereof will pass through a sieve having at least 10,000 meshes per square centimetre. The sieved material is impregnated with a solution of a catalytically-active substance, dried, shaped and calcined. The catalyst may be ground between the drying and the shaping steps and if material is impregnated with more than one solution of different catalytically-active substances the mass is dried before each impregnation. Numerous examples of catalytically-active substances which are used for impregnation are given. The alumina may also contain 1 to 30 per cent of silicic acid or silicates. The catalyst is specially suitable for cracking or hydro-refining of hydrocarbons such as petroleums, tars, shale oils, gasolines, benzols, kerosenes, gas oils, heavy fuel oils and also reduction products of carbon monoxide and polymerization products of olefines. Using hydrogen, illuminating gas, coke-oven gas, cracking gas or low temperature carbonization gas, at about 200 DEG to 600 DEG C. under pressures of 5 to 1000 atmospheres, hydrogen rate of 50 to 5000 litres/Kg/Hm and space rates of 0.1 to 10 V/V/Hm. Catalysts can also be used for desulphurization. They may be reactivated by treatment with an oxygen-containing gas at temperatures 450 DEG to 600 DEG C.ALSO:A base for an alumina catalyst is produced by grinding an aluminium hydroxide so that more than 60 per cent thereof will pass through a sieve having at least 10,000 meshes per square centimetre. Numerous examples of catalytically-active substances which are used for impregnation are given. The catalyst is specially suitable for reforming gasoline or middle oils, dehydrogenation of paraffinic and naphthenic hydrocarbons, cyclization of paraffinic hydrocarbons, removal of oxygen or nitrogen compounds, isomerization of paraffinic hydrocarbons, splitting off side chains containing alkyl groups, oxygen sulphur or nitrogen groups from cyclic compounds. They may be reactivated by treatment with an oxygen-containing gas at temperatures 450 DEG to 600 DEG C.
