Abstract

776,000. Reducing skin friction and modifying rolling. WILLIAMS, K. F. Aug. 5, 1955 [Aug. 17, 1954], No. 23930/54. Class 113. In a ship's hull including a generally flat bottom G beneath which two air tunnels V1, V2 are formed by three downwardly extending projections, two of which N1, N2 are extensions of the sides of the hull, the other M being arranged along the longitudinal centre line of the bottom, the tunnels extending over substantially the whole length of the hull, turbo-jets or the like in the hull convey air to inlets V provided in the bottom of the hull adjacent the bow to direct air into the tunnels in a direction substantially parallel with the bottom of the hull and towards the stern and to maintain a cushion of air in each of the tunnels. The projections N1, N2 are provided with ports R and have secured thereto bracing members Z1, Z2 with ports P and exterior baffle plates F1, F2 defining passages Q up through which air escaping from one or other of the tunnels passes when the ship rolls. A short distance from the stern the roof H of each tunnel slopes downwardly and has a perforated plate I spaced therefrom. A pendulum operated device varies the air pressure in one tunnel with respect to the other to counteract rolling of the ship. Detector units are provided to indicate presence of air in each tunnel and to control the admission of air at inlets V.
