Abstract

775,726. Making bags. SCHWEIZERISCHE INDUSTRIE-GES. June 7, 1955 [June 8, 1954], No. 16327/55. Class 94(2). A device for opening up a flattened tube of material being fed, for example, to a bag making machine, comprises a slider floating freely within the tube but positioned during movement of the tube relative to it, by means surrounding the tube. In one embodiment, Fig 1, a tubular web 1 passes over a slider 2 held stationary by projections 17 on a fixed member 3. In other embodiments, not shown, the tube may move vertically and gravity locate the slider relative to the outer member, or magnetic means or a combination of methods may position the slider. To reduce risk of damage to the tube, one, or both parts, 10, 11, Fig. 6, of the device may carry rollers. A clamp 12 may be provided for temporarily securing the tube to the device. The device may co-operate with a rotating conveyer 26, Fig. 9, having a series of grippers 25 which grip the tube 24 as it is pulled upwards by vertical movement of the device 20, 27. During upward movement, the tube is immobilized against the slider 27 by a clamp 21, but after it is gripped by a clamp 25, the clamp 21 is raised and downward return movement of the device opens up a further length of tube. This length is severed by blades 28, and removed by a rotary step of the conveyer 26.
