Abstract
Meta-ethyltoluene and 1,3,5-diethyltoluene are made by interacting toluene and ethylbenzene, di-or tri-ethylbenzene in the molar ratio of toluene to ethyl groups of at least 0.5 with at least enough liquid hydrogen fluoride to form a separate acid phase and with at least 0.5 mol. of boron trifluoride per mol. of ethyl groups under anhydrous conditions at a temperature not above 135 DEG C., e.g. a temperature in the range - 20 DEG to 100 DEG C., for sufficient time, removing the hydrogen fluoride and boron trifluoride from the acid phase, and fractionating the hydrocarbon mixture which remains. A meta-ethyltoluene fraction may be obtained after interaction for 5 minutes to 2 hours at 50-10 DEG C. of a toluene and ethylbenzene mixture with 5-20 mols. of hydrogen fluoride and at least one mol. of boron trifluoride per mol. of ethylbenzene, and meta-ethyltoluene and 1,3,5-diethyltoluene fractions may be obtained after interaction for 2 minutes to 15 hours, at 100-30 DEG C. of these reactants. A meta-ethyltoluene fraction may be obtained after interaction for 30 minutes to 12 hours of a toluene and diethylbenzene mixture with 5-20 mols. of hydrogen fluoride and at least 2 mols. of boron trifluoride per mol. of the alkyl benzene, and meta-ethyltoluene and 1,3,5-diethyltoluene fractions may be obtained after interaction for 5 minutes to 36 hours at 100-30 DEG C. of these reactants.
