Abstract

A polymerized diolefin is epoxidized in the liquid phase with an aliphatic peracid containing from 1 to 10 carbon atoms. Specified polymers are polybutadiene and polyisoprene and peracetic acid is the specified peracid. The reaction may be carried out in aqueous emulsion, in the presence of a solvent, e.g. toluene, benzene, xylene and chloroform, or, if the polymer is liquid without emulsion or solvent. The treated polymer preferably contains at least 1 per cent oxirane oxygen.
