Abstract
773,664. Blasting cartridges. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E.I. Dec. 3, 1955, No. 34661/55. Class 9 (1). An explosive charge for a blasting cartridge of 1 to 2 in. diameter and density 1.3 to 1.5 grams per cubic centimetre comprises at least 60 per cent. of an ammonium nitrate/sodium nitrate mixture, from 10 to 30 per cent. of a dinitrotoluene/trinitrotoluene blend and 0.5 to 10 per cent. of a finely divided metallic fuel, all parts being by weight. The ammonium nitrate has a bulk density less than 0.95 grams per c.c. and, at least 40 per cent. passes a 100 mesh screen, there being from 30 to 85 per cent. by weight of ammonium nitrate in the mixture. The proportion of dinitrotoluene in the blend is from 1 to 50 per cent. but does not exceed 10 per cent. of the weight of the charge. The ingredients are mixed together and heated to at least 160‹F, cooled slowly with constant stirring to a temperature between 120‹ and 150‹F, then packed at this temperature into a cylindrical form of diameter 1 to 2 ins. The charge may be packed in a waterproof case such as paraffined paper or synthetic film and may be several feet in length. The metal fuel may be a ferrosilicon, aluminium, magnesium-aluminium alloy or magnesium silicide.
