Abstract

The filling of the metal sheath of an igniter cord comprises a mixture of 50 to 95% lead azide and a complementary 50 to 5% particulate aluminium at a loading of at least 0.25 grains of lead azide per foot, the lead azide being 98.5% pure and all parts being selected by weight. The aluminium may range from finely divided powder, e.g. 1 micron in size, to particles 100 microns in size. An igniter composition for a smoke bomb comprises 26% silicon, 35% potassium nitrate, 4% charcoal, 22% black iron oxide and 13% aluminium, grained with a 96/4 acetone/nitrocellulose solution.
