Abstract
The invention comprises condensation products of aromatic orthohydroxyaldehydes or orthohydroxyketones with amines: <FORM:0773489/IV(b)/1> in which X is H or alkyl, Y is O or S and m is 4 or more. The following condensation products are referred to: products from salicylaldehyde with propylamine lauryl ether and propylamine hexyl ether; products from hydroxy acetophenone with propylamine lauryl ether, propylamine hexyl ether and their properties as antioxidants and stabilizers compared with those of known condensation products in compositions for stabilizing &c. mineral oils. Other suitable carbonyl compounds specified include o-hydroxybenzophenone and may be substituted by a variety of groups; other amines specified include ethylamino-decyl, dodecyl- and octadecyl ethers, and also thioethers.ALSO:Condensation products of aromatic ortho-hydroxy aldehydes and ketones with amines of the formula <FORM:0773489/III/1> in which Y is oxygen or sulphur, n is 1, 2 or 3, and m is 4 or more, (see Group IV(b)) are used as anti-oxidants and stabilizers for mineral oils e.g. lubricating, turbine, transformers, motor, gear, Diesel, boring and cutting oils and motor fuels, and are compatible with other additives such as viscosity improvers, high pressure lubricating improvers, rust protectives and solvents. In an example, the addition to turbine oil of the condensation product of salicylaldehyde or hydroxyacetophenone with propylamine lauryl or hexyl ether is described. For comparison purposes, the addition to turbine oil of the condensation product of hydroxyacetophenone with ethylene diamine or alpha-pentadecylamine is described.
