Class 72 [Also in Group XII] An installation for removing dust from the exhaust gas from a Thomson or Bessemer converter, comprises a chimney 2 adapted to receive the mouth of a converter in such a way that diluent air passes up the chimney in a controlled quantity and having liquid sprays 7 to wet the dust particles in the gases, the heavier particles collecting in a hopper 13 and the lighter ones being removed in a packed filter 14 sprayed by jets 15. Dampers may be provided to control the flow of diluent air and a jet 8 is arranged to spray the wall of the chimney adjacent the edge 9 whereby liquid from this edge is entrained by the gases. As shown in Fig. a chimney 65 has mounted therein a hood 66 and a convergent-divergent conduit 67 through which the blow gases from a converter 63 are discharged. The hod 66 has a water-cooled jacket 69 terminating in sprays 71 and sprays 74 adapted to spray the gases which have passed through the hood as they enter the conduit 67. The conduit has a pipe 77 with branches 78 through which further water and/or nitrogen may be introduced into the gases. The hood 66 and conduit 67 are fixed in position by supporting walls 79, 80, 81, 82 and 83 of which the walls 79 and 80 are provided with closable louvres 84 or 85, through which an adjustable amount of diluent air may be admitted into the space enclosed by the walls 79-83. In modifications the conduit is extended to the mouth of the converter and the hood 66 6 is omitted or the hood may be in the form of a tubular coil through which water is circulated. In a further modification of the arrangement of Fig. 8, the louvres 84 and 85 are replaced by adjustable louvres in an upper part of the chimney and spraying nozzles are provided below the louvres. The arrangement in Fig. 10 provides for the discharge of the converter gases into a narrow conduit 102 with an opening leading into the chimney, sprays 106 being aranged in the opening.
