Abstract

772,288. Headgear; pleating. OLIVER'S (RUBBER) Ltd., W. Jan. 7, 1955 [Oct. 12, 1953], No. 28018/53. Classes 63 and 141. Relates to a pleating device for making a water-proof collapsible bonnet comprising a thin rectangular sheet of material, e.g. polyethylene, provided with parallel pleats 1, Fig. 1, gathered at their ends 2 so that on pulling the ends, the bonnet collapses. into a narrow folded strip. According to the invention the pleating device comprises a pack of flat thin flexible strips 12, Fig. 6, secured at one end to a flat bar 7 and clamping means 13, 14, 15 for compressing the pack against the bar 7. A sheet 8 of the bonnet material is secured to the bar 7 by clips 9, 10 and then by means of a tension bar 17, the sheet 8 is passed to and fro over the device while successive strips 12 are laid thereon the strips and material being compressed by a loose bar 13 and clamps 14, 15. A jet of steam is directed along both edges of the " sandwich to permanently crease the material and provide a " crinkly " effect on the edges.
