Abstract

769,961. Filling containers with liquids. DODGE & SEYMOUR, Ltd. April 28, 1955 [May 10, 1954], No. 12274/55. Class 125(2) Relates to machines for charging a valved dispensing container with the propellant liquid or with the liquid to be dispensed. The machine comprises a displacement cylinder 18 which contains the liquid under pressure and which is lowered into sealing engagement with the container inlet whereupon a displacement member 19 is moved into the cylinder to increase the liquid pressure. This increase in pressure first opens a discharge valve in the cylinder and the container valve and then causes a predetermined quantity of liquid to flow into the container. As shown, the displacement member 19 and cylinder 18 are carried on sliders 14, 15 vertically movable in a frame 10. Motion of slider 15 is limited bv upper and lower stops 16, 17 which are ganged together and are vertically adjustable to adapt the machine to different heights of container. Slider,14 is adjustably connected by arm 46 to the piston rod 47 of a pneumatic cylinder 48. Liquid is supplied to the displacement cylinder through a pipe and non-return valve. The discharge valve is carried in a displacement head 21 screwed into the bottom of cylinder 18. The head 21 carries a sleeve 37 in which slides a spring-loaded annulus 36 and a sealing gasket 38 both receiving the valved inlet 39 of the container 40. A passageway including a downwardly-facing valve seat 28 extends from the annulus 36 to the interior of cylinder 18. A valve stem 26 is suspended by pins 32 in the passageway and is biased upwards by a spring 34 so that a valve 29 seats on the seat 28 and a block 31 occludes the passageway. At the start of a cycle, the piston of cylinder 48 and sliders 14, 15 are at the top of their stroke. In operation, a container is inserted beneath the raised head 21 and actuates a trigger (not shown) to supply air to the top of cylinder 48 to lower the piston rod 47 and sliders 14, 15. Member 19 and cylinder 18 descend together until the latter meets stop 17 in which position gasket 38 seals against the container mouth. Upon further movement, the member 19 moves into the cylinder to increase the pressure and this increase acting on the top of valve 29 causes it to move downwards and open. The pressure then acts on the larger area of block 31 which is then moved further down to act on the container valve stem 41 to open container valve 42. Block 31 now lies in an enlarged space 31a so that, during the remainder of the down stroke of member 19, a charge of liquid is forced into the container. A plate 51 now contacts a reversing switch 49 to cause piston rod 47 to rise thus removing the excess pressure in cylinder 18 and allowing container valve 42 and the valve 29 to close. Member 19 and cylinder 18 then rise together until the latter abuts upper stop 16 whereupon member 19 continues alone to draw a fresh supply of liquid through the non-return valve into the cylinder 18. At top-stroke position the machine stops until a fresh cycle. is initiated.
