Abstract

769.428. Electric glass furnaces with electrodes. HANN, D. G. Aug. 18, 1954 [Aug. 21, 1953], No. 23040/53. Class 39(3) In a glass melting furnace or a furnace in which glass is held in a molten state by passing current therethrough between immersed electrodes, the electrode 10 and its stem 11 are both of molybdenum or tungsten or other metal oxidizable at furnace temperature, and at least that part of the stem not immersed in glass 14 is sheathed in a tubular member 15 closed at its outer end 17 and made of platinum or other metal which does not oxidize at furnace temperature. The stem passes'through the top furnace wall to be supported by a clamp 18 on a bracket 19 and is in electrical contact with the sheath but is not welded or bonded thereto. The electrode is preferably not cooled at its outer end, but. if cooled, is not cooled so much as to freeze the glass around the stem. The sheath 15 may dip into the glass and may be a tight fit on the stem 11; or the stem may have an enlarged outer head with which the sheath is in close contact. The outer end of the aperture 12 in the wall may be sealed with clay, or may be enlarged to receive the clamp without the stem projecting externally. The electrode may comprise a single plate of molybdenum or several contiguous strips joined by strips at right angles. Current is supplied through a cable 21.
