Abstract
767,948. Cathode ray tubes. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Aug. 3, 1954 [Aug. 8, 1953], No. 21956/53. Class 39(1). A metal band 6 is shrunk directly on to the periphery of a soft glass end wall portion 3, 4 of the envelope of an electron discharge device, e.g. a cathode ray tube especially a television receiver of the projection type, the metal band 6 not being sealed to the glass but having a higher coefficient of thermal expansion than the glass, so as to keep the end wall portion 3, 4 under compressive stress. This produces the effect of toughening the glass and so minimises cracking due to heat generated in operation. In manufacture the end wall part 3 is fused by means of flange 4 to cone 2 and the metal band is then applied to flange 4 while the glass and band are heated to 500‹-600‹C., i.e. below the softening temperature of the glass. The metal band may be of chrome-nickel alloy or stainless steel and the glass end wall may be of plate window glass or more generally of lead glass ; the entire envelope may be of soft glass. The end wall 3 may be of meniscus shape, as shown. If the main body part of the envelope is of metal, the metal band is shrunk directly on the glass end part and is not applied to the metal envelope wall portion. The provisional Specification states in addition that the metal band may be of chrome-iron alloy.
