Abstract

767,487. Ordnance. LOSFELD, A. June 14, 1954, No. 17432/54. Class 92. Ordnance, e.g. a mortar, is adapted for miniature ammunition practice by a calibre-reducing tube 2 secured at its extremities inside the gun barrel 1 by reinforcing sleeves 3, 15 screw-clamped to the tube 2 and engaging the barrel 1 by means of radial fins 11, 20 on the sleeves, the sleeve 3 at the nozzle end also comprising an annular tightening plug 8 screwed to the sleeve at 7 and having an annular internal projecting portion 9 which is forced hard against seatings 10 formed by extensions of the fins 11 to force them against the barrel 1. Holes 12 in the base of the plug 8 together with an annular passage 13 between the plug 8 and the mouth of the barrel 1 and the spaces between the fins 11 provide passage for the explosion gases to atmosphere. An internally threaded end portion 22 of the tube 2 receives a breech member 23 in which slides a firing-pin 24 terminating in an anvil 25 urged by a spring 27 into contact with the firing pin 26 of the gun 1. A series of openings 30 are provided in tube 2 and these are closed or opened by an adjustable sleeve 31 split longitudinally at 32 and locked after adjustment by a ring 33 screwed at 34. Graduation marks 35 are provided on the tube 2 for adjustment of the sleeve 31 in accordance with the fire-power required. The gases escape through the openings 30, between the fins 11 and through holes 12 of the plug 8 and through the annular passage 13 to atmosphere. In a modification Figs. 5, 6 (not shown) the openings 60 in the tube 2 are surrounded by an apertured spring- urged sleeve 58 adapted to slide between two positions fixed by abutments, one of these abutments being adjustable and the sleeve being forced back towards this abutment at the moment of firing by the explosion gases, this abutment determining the coincidence or otherwise of the openings 60 and the apertures 59 in the sleeve. A breech construction for the tube 2 is provided with a slide valve 54, Fig. 4 (not shown) which permits of free escape of air through ports 42, 43 during descent of the projectile in the tube but closes as soon as the projectile comes to rest against the valve 54 and remains closed during firing under the pressure of the explosion gases. Specification 767,488 is referred to.
