Abstract
An aqueous solution of acrylonitrile containing divinylacetylene and, if desired, other byproducts from the synthesis of acrylonitrile, is freed from the divinyl-acetylene by bringing it into contact with a solid surface-active adsorption agent, the divinyl-acetylene being selectively adsorbed. The aqueous solution may be that obtained by the absorbtion in water of the reaction gases from the synthesis of acrylonitrile from acetylene and hydrocyanic acid in the presence of a cuprous salt catalyst, which have been separated from said catalyst. It is stated that inorganic or organic substances may be used as adsorbtion agents, surface active earths, aluminium oxide, active carbons and artificial resins being specifically mentioned. The process may be carried out by suspending the adsorption agent in the aqueous solution and, after shaking or stirring, filtering off the agent, but advantageously the aqueous solution is caused to flow through a column charged with the adsorption agent, which may be regenerated by heat or treatment with steam. Examples in which active carbon and aluminium oxide are used as adsorption agents illustrate each of the above methods. Specification 727,898 is referred to.
