Solids, treating with gases; solid absorbents for gases; catalytic apparatus.-In heterogeneous gas reactions in which a gas reacts physically or chemically with a finely-divided solid such as a catalyst or adsorbent the temperature is controlled by mixing with the solid a material of high heat conductivity. For example in the removal of substances from gases by treatment with activated carbon, metallic balls such as iron shot are mixed with the carbon. After adsorption the balls may be separated from the carbon, cooled and mixed with fresh activated carbon.
