Abstract
766,656. Electric control systems. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 9, 1954 [Dec. 31, 1953], No. 36360/53. Class 40 (1). A device for aligning, e.g. a machine tool relative to a workpiece in a selected one of a number of predetermined discrete positions comprises a rectangular ferromagnetic bar 1 (Fig. 2), with a series of holes 2, preferably filled with non-magnetic material, and a locally associated electromagnetic head 3 consisting of an E-type core 4 but with two centre limbs 5, having a secondary coil 7 wound on each of the centre limbs connected in series opposition, and an A.C. energized primary winding 6, so that when the head is not symmetrically aligned relative to a hole 2, there is a resultant voltage in the secondary windings which can be utilized in a servo-system to align the two parts accurately. The bar 1 may be provided with further smaller holes into which magnetic plugs may be inserted to adjust the magnetic characteristic associated with each hole. An alternative head (Fig. 5) has three limbs 10, 11, 12 with the coils wound symmetrically on the outer limbs, and the centre limb 11 capped by a rectangular or circular disc 13.
