In a sequential colour television system a single carrier wave is modulated in turn by two signals the first of which is the green signal and the second of which comprises the red signal, together with the blue signal, the latter being transposed in frequency by means of an auxiliary carrier such that the spectra of the blue and red signals do not overlap sufficiently to prevent correct separation at the receiver. The definition of the blue signal is considerably lower than that of either the green or the red signal and the overall band-widths of the systems is equal to the pass-band of the green signal, that of the red signal being 20 per cent smaller. For stereoscopic operation the green and red signals may be replaced by black/white " stereoscopic pair " signals and the blue signal replaced by the sound signals. The receiver for colour reproduction may employ: (1) a separate cathode-ray tube for each colour; (2) a single tri-gun tube; (3) a single tube with two guns, one of which is employed for the blue signals, or (4) a two-colour tube with one electron-gun together with a further tube for the third colour.
