Abstract
852,512. Television. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 18, 1957 [March 22, 1956], No. 8910/56. Class 40(3). In a colour television transmission system in which luminance signals 1 are transmitted with a full upper-side band and a vertigial lower sideband together with chrominance signals comprising a narrow double side-band modulation 3 and, in quadrature therewith, a second modulation 4 having a full upper side-band and a vestigial lower side-band, the upper frequencies of the luminance signals 2 (i.e. those between 4À75 and 7 mc/s. are transmitted, as shown, on the vestigial side of the luminance carrier. By employing this arrangement instead of extending the upper side-band of the luminance signals 1 to 7 mc/s. increased definition is obtained without the need for changing the spacing between the vision carrier O mc/s. and the sound carrier 5.5 mc/s. which would present inter-carrier sound operation in co-operating receivers. In such a receiver (Fig. 2) a chrominance trap 9 is arranged to suppress the chrominance signals 3, 4 so that the luminance channel receives only the luminance signals 1 and 2. Such a trap would also be provided in monochrome receivers designed to receive signals as described in connection with Fig. 1 and would receive normal definition signals on one side-band and higher definition signals on the other side-band.
