Abstract

764,435. Fifth wheel couplings. VAILLANT, J. Jan. 20, 1955, No. 1751/55. Class 103(5). A tractor has secured to its rear end a concave spherical member 1 having a transversely arranged slot 13 and a mating convex spherical member 2 having a longitudinally arranged slot 14 the two slots accommodating a common square member 19 to prevent relative rotation of the spherical members about a vertical axis but allowing rotation about their common centre of sphericity. The member 2 accommodates a pair of jaws 41, 42 pivoted on pins 43, 44 and provided with mating surfaces to enclose the trailer king-pin 8. The jaws are locked by a spring-loaded plunger 45 in the coupled position of the trailer. When the plunger 45 is withdrawn by the lever 51 detents 53, 54, which are urged apart by the spring 55, engage pins 58, 59 to hold the plunger withdrawn until the jaws open to release the king-pin 8.
