Abstract

764,328. Stuffing-box substitutes. CRANE PACKING, Ltd. July 28, 1953 [April 30, 1952], No. 10864/52. Class 122 (5). In a face-type mechanical seal for a rotary shaft 1 the seating ring 19 and the sealing ring 36 are longitudinally split into sections held together by longitudinally split clamping means 23, 28 having interfitting parts with the rings 19, 36 to locate the sections thereof, and at least one of the rings 19 has a radial face at one side and a bevelled face 34 adjacent the other side engaged by complementary faces on the clamping means 23. The shaft 1 is mounted, where it extends through its casing, in a bearing sleeve 10 having seated thereon a check-ring 11 divided in halves held together by bolts 13, one of the halves being formed with a transverse groove 14 engaged by a pin 15 secured to the seal housing 3. The seating ring 19 is formed by three segments encircled by the split channel section clamping ring 23, having a radial flange 24 and a tapered flange 25 bearing directly or through gaskets respectively on the rear face and the tapered surface 34 of the ring. Compression springs 31 projecting from sockets in the check ring 11 and abutting the clamping ring 23 urge the seating ring 19, which is coupled with the check ring 11 by pins 27, into sealing contact with the sealing ring 36 formed in halves and held together by a split annular band 38 having tapered flanges 37 engaging complementary surfaces at the junctions of the sides and the outer periphery of the sealing ring. The band 36 is rotatably connected to the shaft by bolts 39 carried by a diametrically split drive disc 40 secured to the shaft by screws 41. The sealing ring 36 is sealed to the shaft by packing rings 45 and the bearing sleeve 10 is sealed to the housing 3 and the seating ring 19 by packing- rings 17 and 20 respectively. A normal type stuffing box 8 may be formed as an extension of the seal housing 3. Specification 756,725 is referred to.
