Abstract
Aluminium is extracted from aluminium oxide or from raw materials containing aluminium oxide by mixing the material with aluminium sulphide and a reducing agent containing carbon and reacting the mixture at a temperature of at least 1000 DEG C., preferably at least 1500 DEG C., precipitating aluminium from the resulting gas mixture containing a lower aluminium sulphide and reusing the aluminium sulphide thus formed by recycling. The reaction is preferably carried out under low pressure. The original mixture may contain, instead of or together with aluminium sulphide, a sulphur compound of another metal such as iron which reacts with aluminium oxide to form aluminium sulphide. The mixture may be introduced in granular form into the reaction chamber, for example by passing in the finely divided mixture through a hollow electrode into an are furnace.
