Abstract
<PICT:0426165/III/1> In the production of sulphur by the gaseous reduction of sulphur dioxide, the reduction is effected in a chamber so constructed that the sulphur dioxide is introduced in counter current to and is preheated by the reaction gases. As shown, the reducing gases enter by a pipe 2 at the top of the reaction chamber and mingle with the sulphur dioxide gases delivered by a centrally situated pipe 1<a> up which the gases pass from a pipe 1. As the reaction is exothermic, heat is given up by the reaction gases in their passage to the exit pipe 3. In a modification, the reaction gases pass down the centre of the chamber and sulphur dioxide passes up the exterior space, the central portion being filled with contact material, e.g. brick, coated with a catalyst, e.g. iron or an iron compound or an alkali compound. Fresh powdered catalyst may be supplied from a hopper 4 during the process. As reducing gas may be employed producer gas or blast furnace gas and in the case of producer gas, sulphur dioxide may be fed to the producer; powdered carbon may also be used as the reducing agent.
