Abstract

763,631. Extruding presses. FIELDING & PLATT, Ltd. March 8, 1955 [March 11, 1954], No. 7165/54. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXIX] An hydraulic press for extruding tubes or for other metal - working operations comprises a ram 8 having a portion operating in a cylinder 7 to which pressure is supplied for the working stroke, and a portion operating in a cylinder 6 which portion has a greater area than that in cylinder 7 so that the ram is retracted when liquid is supplied to both cylinders. To effect a power stroke the cylinder 6 is opened to exhaust, whereupon the full pressure of the supply is instantaneously effective to move the ram to the left. An auxiliary ram 17 is adjustably mounted on a tail-rod 10 of the ram 8 and operates in a cylinder 18. An approach stroke is effected by supplying liquid to all three cylinders. The pressure liquid is supplied by a hydro-pneumatic accumulator to the cylinders via a valve block 23 and pipes 25 which have telescopic glanded connections with the cylinders to permit slight movement of the press at the end of the stroke of the ram.
