Abstract
761,364. Laminated materials. YOUNG, P. D. S., and LEADER, D. A. Aug. 10, 1954 [Aug. 17, 1953], No. 22672/53. Class 140. Laminates comprising sheet material made of fibres, threads, or wires united by polyester resin adhesive, are made by first impregnating or coating the material with a solid, thermosetting, unsaturated polyester resin and a polymerization catalyst in the form of an organic peroxy compound, then wetting it with a liquid composition consisting of a stabilized polymerizable monomer containing the grouping CH 2 =C <, which is compatible with the polyester resin and a polymerisation promoter which coacts with the catalyst to induce polymerization of the monomer, and maintaining the wetted material in contact with other like wetted material or another wetted surface until the monomer has polymerized to form the desired bond. The sheet material may be fabric, paper, cardboard, wood veneer, wire gauze, or glass fibre mat. The polyester may be derived from a polyhydric alcohol such as glycerol, trimethylene glycol, ethylene or diethylene glycol, propylene glycol, pentaerythritol, 2: 2 - dimethylpropane - diol - 1: 3, 1: 3- butanediol, and 2 - butyl - 2 - ethyl - butanediol - 1 : 3, and an olefinically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid such as maleic, fumaric, citra-. conic, itaconic, mesaconic, aconitic, chloromaleic, and carbic acids. The monomer may be styrene, a methyl- or chloro-styrene, methyl acrylate or methacrylate, cyclohexyl acrylate, or vinyl acetate. The polymerization catalyst may be benzoyl peroxide, cyclohexanone peroxide, lauroyl peroxide, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, t-butyl-hydroperoxide, cumene hydroperoxide, perphthalic acid, t-butyl-di-perphthalate, or t-butyl perbenzoate, and the promoter may be dimethyl aniline, dimethyl-p-toluidine, cerium, cobalt or manganese naphthenate, or dodecyl mercaptan. The stabilizer or inhibitor for the liquid monomer may be ascorbic acid, hydroquinone, or t-butyl catechol. The preliminary impregnation may be effected with a solution or suspension of the solid resin in a volatile solvent containing the polymerization catalyst, or by impregnation with powdered resin followed by a short heating to fuse the resin, with subsequent impregnation with the catalyst.
