Abstract

1385760 Unsaturated polyester compositions ASAHI KASEI KOGYO KK 24 Oct 1972 [26 Oct 1971] 48972/72 Heading C3P A moulding composition comprises: (1) an unsaturated polyester prepared by poly-condensation of ethylene glycol (optionally containing 10 mole per cent or less of another glycol), terephthalic acid or dimethyl terephthalate and an ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or its anhydride or bisglycol ester, and containing 40-60% by mol of ethylene terephthalate units and 40-60% by mol of ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid units and having a reduced viscosity of 0À1 or more; (2) 10-50% by weight of a cross-linking vinyl or α-alkylvinyl monomer based upon the weight of the mixture thereof with the unsaturated polyester; (3) 0À5-2À0% by weight of a free-radical generating curing agent based upon the weight of the composition; and (4) 10-50% by weight of short glass fibres based upon the weight of the composition, the short glass fibres having a fibre length of 1À5 mm. or less and a ratio of length to diameter of at least 10; the composition not substantially flowing below 50‹ C., but being capable of flowing at 50‹ C. or above. In the examples the compositions comprise unsaturated polyesters prepared from dimethyl terephthalate, ethylene glycol, fumaric acid, bis-(#- hydroxyethyl)fumarate and maleic anhydride; styrene, chlorostyrene, vinyltoluene, tert.-butyl styrene, methyl methacrylate, acrylic acid, diethylene glycol dimethacrylate and diethylene glycol diacrylate; cumene hydroperoxide and tert.-butyl perbenzoate; short glass fibres; hydroquinone. The compositions are extruded and moulded.
