Abstract
758,948. Electric heating resistances. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D. Jan. 21, 1955 [Jan. 29, 1954], No. 2710/54. Class 39(3). Adjacent ends of thin electric heating strips 1, 2 e.g. of sprayed aluminium are connected, so that the strips are in series, by a connecting conductor 7 which is narrower than the heater strips, is of better conductivity e.g. at least partly of silver or copper and contacts the ends of the heater strips 1, 2 over their full widths ; and the heating effect per unit of area of connecting conductor is arranged to be the same as that of the strips. The thickness of the connecting conductor 7 is greater than that of the strips 1, 2 but its width is less than one third or one quarter of that of either strip. The conductor 7 may also be formed by spraying through a stencil. Thus a strip of conductor material may first be sprayed on a ron-conducting surface, e.g. of plastic, then two resistance strips are sprayed with their ends extending over the conductor and finally an upper layer of conducting material may be sprayed on. The heating strips 1, 2 may be parallel or at an angle e.g. an acute or a right angle, and in the last case, the conductor strip 7 is L-shaped. Cold spots at the outer corners of the heating strips are thus avoided. De-icing equipment for aircraft may be formed by spraying a layer of thermosetting plastic adhesive on a metal aircraft skin, then spraying on the metal strips 1, 2, 7, spraying a coating of plastic over all and then heating to cure the plastic. Specifications 703,374 and 740,551 are referred to.
