Abstract

823,435. Electric surface heaters. NAPIER & SON Ltd., D. Dec. 23, 1957 [Jan. 10, 1957], No. 1053/57. Class 39(3) In the manufacture of an electric surface heater, a layer of flexible non-conducting material, on to one surface of which a sprayed metal resistance coating has previously been applied, is attached to a base surface by means of an adhesive, and a top insulating layer is applied over the sprayed metal surface. As shown, a glass cloth tape 10 has on one side a resistance layer 11 of sprayed metal, e.g. aluminium, nickel, or copper alloy, and on the other side a coating 12 of thermo-setting resin, e.g. an epoxy resin, by means of which it adheres to a base structure 13, the tape being applied in a resistance pattern formed by a number of parallel heater paths as in Fig. 3. Cross connections 14 of copper braiding or hot sprayed conper connect the ends of the tapes, the metallized surfaces of which are covered by a top insulating layer 15 of glass cloth with an adhesive backing 16. An inner insulating layer, e.g. of thermosetting resin or glass cloth tape, may be applied to the base 13 before the application of the metallized tape. The top insulating layer may comprise a thermosetting resin or varnish. The tape may be metallized over its full width, or over a limited width at its centre only, or two or more parallel spaced strips of the resistance material may be provided on each length of the tape 10 (Fig. 6, not shown).
