Abstract

758,857. Unattended repeaters. SIEMENS BROS. & CO., Ltd. March 4, 1955 [March 10, 1954], No. 6933/54. Class 40 (4). [Also in Group XL (c)] The filaments of a valve provided with duplicate filaments or heaters are connected with resistors in a bridge circuit so that if either filament fails the other provides full energization of the valve. The arrangement is more particularly intended for unattended repeaters, e.g. in a submarine or subterranean cable. In an arrangement for a constant current filament supply, the current normally divides, one half passing through resistor R1 and filament H2 and the other half through filament H1 and resistor R2. The bridge is balanced so that bridging resistor R3 normally carries no current. If one filament, e.g. H1, fails, the circuit reduces to a series resistor, e.g. R1 in series with the operative filament, e.g. H2, in shunt with resistors, e.g. R2, R3. The value of the bridging resistor R3 is so chosen that the remaining operative filament then dissipates the same amount of energy as the two filaments in normal operation. In a circuit for operation from a constant voltage source. Fig. 2 (not shown), the bridge is arranged with the two filaments in adjacent arms, their common point being connected to one of the supply lines.
