Abstract
Polymerizable ethylenic monomers are polymerized in aqueous emulsion using as emulsifier a polybasic acid derivative of a hydrocarbon containing at least 20 carbon atoms, the amount of monomer being at least equal in weight to the weight of the aqueous phase and the polymerization being continued until the total solids comprise not less than 40 per cent of the total emulsion. Specified ethylenic materials are butadiene, isoprene, 2,3-dimethyl butadiene, acrylonitrile, methyl styrene, vinyl toluene, vinyl naphthalene, vinyl pyridine, esters of acrylic and substituted acrylic acids, butadiene-styrene, butadiene-styrene-methyl methacrylate and butadiene - styrene - acrylonitrile. Specified emulsifiers are dimerized linoleic acid, the dimers or trimers of octadecatrienoic acids, and hexadecatrienoic acid and their hydrogenation products. The emulsifiers are preferably used as salts, e.g. the potassium salts, and preferably in an amount between 0.3 to 5 parts. Catalysts such as the persulphates or perborates of sodium, potassium or ammonium, hydrogen peroxide, benzoyl peroxide, di-t.-butyl peroxide, cumenehydroperoxide, diisopropylbenzene or di-t.-butyl benzene hydroperoxides, cyclohexylbenzene hydroperoxide, and p-menthanehydroperoxide may be used as may the usual "redox" compounds, e.g. sodium sulphate, ferrous salts, sugars, formaldehyde sulphoxylates and polyethylene polyamines, and modifiers such as dodecyl mercaptan, triisobutylene mercaptan, or mixtures of primary or tertiary C10 to C18 mercaptans. The reaction may be short-stopped, e.g. with a salt of dimethyldithiocarbamic acid. The preferred products are latices having an average particle size visible at 950 times magnification of at least 20,000 ae (or the major proportion of the particles being in the range 7000 to 66,000 ae), a Brookfield viscosity of less than 200 cps. and a total solids content of at least 60 per cent. U.S.A. Specifications 2,379,413 and 2,482,761 are referred to.
