Class 87(2) To prevent the bowing of wire cutters when cutting a block of cheese, the pressure is applied to the block, in a plane perpendicular to the relative movement of the block and cutters, during the cutting operation. As shown, wire cutters 35 are mounted on a frame 55, which is removably locked by clamping means 65 to a fixed frame 33. The cutters are tensioned by springs 81 between anchors 80 and frame 55, the tension being adjustable by nuts 83, 85. The cheese block is pushed upwardly through the wires on a pneumatically-operated platform 23, the movements of' which are controlled by an electric system (Fig. 15 not shown). The platform 23 has upstanding fixed sides 25 and hinged sides 26, defining a box 27, which may be opened to admit the cheese. The box is of smaller dimensions than the cheese to be cut so that lateral pressure is exterted on it when the sides 26 are locked by a catch in theclosed position shown. In operation the cheese block is slid on a pallet along a fixed table 17 on to the platform 23 and the box 27 locked around it. Air is then admitted to cylinder 141, raising platform 23 via connecting rod 143 and forcing the cheese through the wires 35 which pass through serrations 37 in the walls 25, 26 of the box 27. The cheese and box are then lowered. To prevent the drag of the wires 35 lifting the cheese when the block is lowered, a cover plate 99 having serrations 103 on its lower side corresponding to the wires 35 is secured to box 27.
