Abstract

In the production of felt hats, fur fibres are carrotted with an aqueous solution comprising an oxidising agent and formamide. The oxidising agent may be hydrogen peroxide or a per salt and the solution may also contain nitric and/or hydrochloric acid, formaldehyde, and cerium nitrate or iron salts. The fibres may be hair from rabbits or hares and may be carrotted on the pelt or removed from the skin prior to carrotting, and in the latter case may be carrotted by a coventional process before carroting with an aqueous solution comprising formaldehyde, formamide and hydrogen peroxide. The fibres may be treated in a prefelted condition after having been formed into cones and treated with hot, acidified water.
