Abstract

755,438. Wire rope slings. BRITISH ELECTRICAL REPAIRS, Ltd. May 11, 1955 [Feb. 16, 1954], No. 4495/54. Class 78 (4). A spring comprises a wire rope laid to form a number of longitudinal strands 2, Fig. 1, which pass round end pieces 4, 5 and are interwoven with transverse strands 3 which may be formed by the ends of the rope. In the form illustrated, one end piece 4 can pass through the other 5 to form a bight running on a roller 7. Combs 6 welded to the end pieces 4, 5 separate the longitudinal strands 2 Eyes 8 in the end piece 4 may receive a lifting hook or be bolted to a lug forming one of several spaced along a lifting beam so that several slings similar to that of Fig. 1 may be suspended from the beam to support a lengthy load. The end piece 4 may be formed as a closed triangle which may have a lug to form the eye 8. In an alternative construction the end pieces comprise thimbles set in eyes at the ends of a pair of wire ropes which, together with the strip 1 of Fig. 1, form the sling. The strip 1 may have a sheath of rubber or similar material. Corner pieces 12, Fig. 4, for protecting a load from the sling comprise part-cylindrical bodies 12 carrying flanges 16 joined by a bridge-piece welded to the flanges or removably secured by screws and enclosing a slot through which the sling is threaded.
