Abstract

Titanium or zirconium is produced by reducing titanium or zirconium oxide with carbon or silicon or a carbide or silicide at a temperature over 3000 DEG C. under a vacuum of 10-5 m.m. Hg or higher. Additional metals e.g. Mo, W, Cr, Al, Mn and Ni, may be added to form alloys and these metals may be added as such or as carbides or silicides or partly as oxides. The mixture of titanium or zirconium oxide and the reducing agent, with or without the additional metals, may be pressed to form an electrode and an arc struck between this and a similar electrode or a water-cooled copper electrode under vacuum to form the required metal or alloy. The mixture of titanium or zirconium oxide and the reducing agent may be heated to at least 2000 DEG C. in a protective atmosphere, e.g. hydrogen, before adding the additional metals. The production of the following alloys is described.: 1. Mo 6 per cent; Ti the balance. 2. Al 2-3 per cent; Cr 3-5 per cent; Ti the balance. 3. Ti 20 per cent; Mo 10 per cent; Zr the balance.
