754,335. Hydraulic turbines and pumps. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Dec. 3, 1954 [Dec. 8, 1953], No. 34145/53. Classes 110(1) and 110(3) A machine which can be operated alternately as a turbine and a pump and has feathering runner vanes with axes converging in a point O on the axis of the runner, is provided with a seating ring 3, arranged in the casing 4, which can be moved into contact with the tips of the runner vanes when the machine is not in operation. At this time the vanes 1, 2 have been turned to contact one another to close the water passage and a seperate shut-off valve becomes unnecessary. The ring may be operated by hydraulic pressure applied to the recess 6. Alternatively it may be raised by a wedge ring or by means of vertical servomotors. Instead of a movable ring, an inflatable plastic or rubber ring may be used.
