Abstract

1293206 Variable pitch propellers A M LIAAEN AS 25 March 1970 [28 March 1969] 14426/70 Heading B7V A variable pitch propeller has blades 2, Fig. 2, controlled by a servomotor piston 5 in a cylinder 4 to which pressure fluid is supplied from slide valve-controlled passages 12, 13, Fig. 3, via passages in the propeller shaft 6, an emergency fluid pressure supply being connectable to the servomotor for holding the blades 2 in their forward propulsion setting when the normal fluid pressure supply fails. The emergency supply is connected to inlet 291, after removal of pin 292, and acts to move a piston 26 to the left, so that its hollow piston-rod 27 closes normal supply port 13. Spigot 251 prevents the emergency supply from communicating with servomotor supply conduit 15 until port 13 has been closed. The emergency supply moves servomotor piston 5 to the right to an extreme position in which a chamfered portion of the piston engages a lip of seal 30 to prevent leakage and return movement of the piston, the emergency supply then being cut off and pin 292 replaced. When the normal fluid supply is restored, pin 292 is removed and the normal fluid supply is connected to port 13 to act, via grooves 222, on step 273 of piston-rod 27 to move the piston 26 and piston-rod 27 to the right. An alternative arrangement is described wherein piston 5 moves to the left to move blades 2 into their forward propulsion setting, Figs. 5 to 8 (not shown).
